If your painting is going to be framed then make your frame part of the painting. Be conscious of the fact that it’s going to be hanging in a museum when you paint it so the people who see it can really connect with you.

” Fans that I meet, they’re like me, they have this optimism to them. They’re smart enough to know how brutal the world is and they know all the ugly words for all the things that are bad about everything, but they’re compelled to want things to be better. They want to be happy. They want to like people. They want to hug people. They oftentimes don’t know how to do it. And they have a lot of stories about how they failed to do it right in a world full of people that know how to hug people and take it for granted. They are misfits that are proud to be misfits, but at the same time, desperately hunger to fit in because it feels good.” - Dan Harmon

Dan Harmon’s my favorite.

I will never be tired of The Room.

I could watch this again, forever.

My greatest love.

As a movie blog, I feel it is my duty to reblog the greatest movie of all time.

Sometimes I’m like “wow!  I’m getting so much done today!” but then I remember that none of my work involves checking tumblr every 5 seconds and I stop being like that.

Banquets, parties, festivals… you name it, I’m socially awkward at it.

On Film Length

Movies today are too darn long.

I’m generalizing.  But there does seem to be an unfortunate trend of making movies longer and longer, without making them better.  The most obvious recent example is The Hobbit, or Avatar.  Dan Harmon mentioned this in his most recent Harmontown podcast (check it out if you don’t listen already; it’s freaking brilliant).  But before you think that I just write whatever Dan Harmon thinks, I want to say that I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and Dan Harmon’s timely reminder is just one of many reasons that we would be best friends if I lived in LA.  Some other reasons include my obsession with Channel 101 and Mr. Harmon’s cat, Fiv.

Briefly, as is fitting, here are my thoughts on movie length.

The shorter the better.

I say, you get an hour and a half for nothing. HOWEVER, if you can tell your story in less than an hour and a half, do it.  And even if you take the full hour and a half, this can still feel too long. But, generally, an hour and a half is a good baseline movie length.

Two hours is the upper limit.  And for each additional minute you take over the 1 1/2 mark, you better have a very compelling reason.

In the rare occasion that you need more than two hours to tell your story, it is permissible to go up to two and a half hours.  BUT, for every additional minute you take over the two hour mark, you are fighting an uphill battle.  Every minute had better be crucial to your storytelling. You have to fight for more than two hours.

There is no reason any movie should ever be three hours.  There just isn’t.  Not Titanic. Not Lord of the Rings. Certainly not The Hobbit. Maaaaaaybe Gone With The Wind because the sweeping scope of history is so important in that movie.  Although I’d be in favor of taking one more editing pass on that one.

In conclusion, let’s not forget that a movie is a story.  It’s a selection of events, so you had better be selective.   Get in, make your point, get out.
